Ultra-Violet light units.
Ultra-violet radiation is very powerful, and short-wave UV-C radiation contains so much energy that it can kill bacteria, viruses and other primitive organisms. It does this by breaking down the molecular structure of the DNA, thereby preventing these organisms from reproducing. UV-C initiates photo-oxidation reactions that destroy chloramines without adding more chemicals. It is the chloramines in pool water that are responsible for the unpleasant smells, and cause irritation to the eyes and throat.
Phillips - the largest lamp manufacturer in the world - has extensive experience of applying this technology in hospitals, research laboratories, pharmaceutical institutions, food processing industries, drinking and waste water management. Phillips has now developed these systems for use in small swimming pools. Other benefits of their technology are:
- long lamp life - up to 9,000 hours,
- highest end-of-life output,
- wide range of single-ended lamps permits compact equipment and easy lamp changes,
- very low mercury dose (5.5mg) protects the environment.
- consistent quality ensures reliable operation.
There are numerous advantages in applying UV-C to treat your swimming pool:
- UV light deals with the primary kill of bacteria, so much smaller quantities of chemical
are required to maintain a residual of disinfectant in the water,
- Smaller quantities of other chemicals are needed for water balancing,
- Red eye and skin irritation problems are greatly reduced,
- People with allergies or asthma have much less trouble,
- Consumption of chemicals for disinfection is much reduced,
- Water clarity is improved, and it is fresher and cleaner!
- it is far better for the environment than traditional pool treatment methods.

Ultra-Violet light units
Phillips UV-C units use stainless steel tube - as shown here - to hold a glass tube that is closed at one end. The UV-C lamp is placed inside this glass tube, and it emits the UV-C radiation within this sealed chamber.
This unit would normally be plumbed into your pool or spa pipework just after the filter, so that the pool's full flow passes through the chamber. The water circulates over the glass tube to expose it to the UV light. This neutralises the bacteria, disrupting the DNA to prevent them from breeding. The highly polished insides of these stainless tubes reflects the UV-C light and increases the efficiency of the units by up to 35%.
