Pool Pumps
It is important to use a swimming pool pump that is well made, performs well and is reliable - as the quality of your pool water can depend upon it.
A good pump can last for many, many years, and even if you do not need to operate your filtration system for 24 hours a day - a good filter pump is half of the answer in the battle to kill and remove harmful bacteria in water that you swim in.
A Two-stage Process:
The careful application of chemicals in pool water should deal with most harmful bacteria. These can be either killed by:
- chemical disnifectants such as chlorine, bromine, peroxygens, and biguanides,
- algaecides such as copper sulphate,
- electro-mechanical systems such as ozone and ultra-violet light.
The chemical process only kills the bacteria - what stops the water from thickening up with dead bugs? - effective filtration. The water needs to be passed through a filter - sand filters are usually more effective than cartridge filters in separating out fine particles -to return clear, disinfected water to the pool.
Following on from this, a circulation pump should be selected to match the size of the filter (usually measured in gallons per hour or cubic metres per hour), so that its flow rate suits the area of the filter bed. Any filter has an upper limit to the volume of water that can be pumped through it, and if the flow rate exceeds what the filter can deal with, the system becomes pressurised and can lead to 'filter breakthrough'. This is where dirty water is pushed through a filter bed with such force that the debris cannot be removed in the process, and the contamination is just recirculated.
